What is Pau D' Arco?

Pau D' Arco is a tall, flowering, evergreen hardwood tree found in the South American Amazonian Rainforests and has a rich history of medicinal and curative properties.  It's wood has been highly prized for centuries as it is also one of the hardest, most durable woods in the world.

Known by many names such as "Lapacho," "Taheebo," "Tahuari," "Tajy," "Ipe," and "Ipe Roxo" among others, native South Americans credit the teas and beverages made from its bark, with the amazingly long life  and strength of their elders.

The tree itself can grow up to 150 feet with a trunk base of an average of 4 to 6 feet in diameter and has been the source of a long and well documented history of use and medicinal tradition regarding strong vitality, resistance to disease, and delayed aging.

The name and word "Tajy" itself means "To Have Strength and Vigor."

Aborigines of Brazil, northern Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia and other South American countries traditionally use the inner lining of the tree bark for medicinal purposes going back almost a thousand years, and there is evidence that its use may even pre-date the Incas.

Pau D'Arco has long been recorded to be used by forest inhabitants throughout the Amazon for malaria, anemia, colitis, respiratory problems, colds, cough, flu, fungal infections, fever, arthritis and rheumatism, snakebite, poor circulation, boils, syphilis, and cancer. In South American herbal medicine, it is also considered to be astringent, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, and as a laxative.  It is further used to treat ulcers, syphilis, urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal problems, candida and yeast infections, cancer, diabetes, prostatitis, constipation, and allergies

Not counting its history of medicinal use in the rainforests and in South America, Pau D'Arco has found multiple medicinal uses around the world.  In North American herbal medicine, it is considered to be analgesic, antioxidant, antiparasitic, antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and laxative, as well as to have anticancerous properties. It has been used for fevers, infections, colds, flu, syphilis, urinary tract infections, cancer, respiratory problems, skin ulcerations, boils, dysentery, gastrointestinal problems of all kinds, arthritis, prostatitis, and circulation disturbances.

Pau D'Arco also is employed in herbal medicine systems in the United States for lupus, diabetes, ulcers, leukemia, allergies, liver disease, Hodgkin's disease, osteomyelitis, Parkinson's disease, and psoriasis, and is a popular natural remedy for candida and yeast infections. The recorded uses in European herbal medicine systems reveal that it is used in much the same way as in the United States, and for the same conditions.
